Thankful Thursday

On my quest to become a morning person, I have been starting my mornings with positive affirmations.  I still find it hard to climb out of my warm fleece sheets and even harder to get my kids up and going when I myself want nothing more than to go back to sleep for a couple more hours. However, being conscious of the good things around me and starting my day with a thankful heart does make it a little easier.

  • With a full waiting room this afternoon, I'm thankful Jackson's name was called to see the doctor within only a few minutes of actually waiting
  • Jackson's does not have an ear infection (yay!) just pressure from a cold he's getting over. No antibiotics needed.
  • Veggies & dip - Ashleigh and I have gone through 4lbs of carrots, 5 cucumbers, a bunch of celery and head of cauliflower in about 4 days. Now to get the boys on board too.
  • Movies that humble us
  • Stranger's stories that inspire us (I've been watching a lot of Ted Talks again)

Ashleigh - Sweet 16

My sweet baby girl is 16 and I am so proud of the young lady she growing up to be. She is amazingly beautiful inside and out.

On her birthday she had flowers delivered from her Grandma. I let her play hooky from school and we went out for sushi at her favorite sushi restaurant.

Her Dad and I wanted to surprise her with a car for her birthday. It was such a hard secret to keep, we had been planning for about a year. Her Dad had found a great starter car and put a lot of hours into replacing parts and getting it running well in the months before her birthday.

The day of the big surprise, I parked her car in front of her favorite ice cream shop. We had a big group of people met at Leatherbys to celebrate her birthday together.  We happened to get seated right in front of the window where her car was parked!  When she wasn't looking, I snuck out put a big red bow on the hood.

On the card, it said that her dad, stepmom, Russ and myself wanted her to have something very special on her 16th. Her car keys were beautifully wrapped in a jelwery box and she was anticipating a special necklace. I love watching the faces of Jackson and Mckenzie (their half sister) because they were in on the secret and were so excited for her.

SHE HAD NO IDEA.

It was perfect.

Thankful Thursday

  • Warm fuzzy socks and soft warm blankets
  • Very hot baths...and my kids not knocking on the door or yelling from the other room while I enjoy it
  • Coming home to find the dog has already been walked and the walks already shoveled
  • The dishes not taking as long as I thought they would (I really miss having a dishwasher!)
  • Patience. Lots and lots of patience. Especially with tired cranky kids...who have a tired cranky mom.
  • Twinkly lights and pretty shinny things. It's January 9th and I have no intention of taking down my Christmas decorations yet.
  • Cards and letters. Emails and Facebook comments are nice but I love getting little happy surprises in my mail box.
  • Having the weekend off to catch up on sleep... and laundry

Lego Robotics

Jackson's school takes part in First Lego League, a program geared to get kids excited about science and technology.  Two times a week during the school year, the Lego robotics club met after school to work towards competition at the end of the year.

This years theme for Lego League was, Natures Fury. In the three part competition, the kids are challenged with real world natural disasters and how to Prepare, Be Safe, and Rebuild using technology.

Part One: The Project.

Last min presentation prep
Jackson's team chose a topic from a list of natural disasters such as; flood, earthquake, hurricanes, and tornados. They decided on Wildfires and chose to address the problem of keeping firefighters safe while battling a raging wildfire. Their solution was a life-size robotic firefighter that was controlled remotely to keep the human firefighter safe.

Over the months they had to plan, design and research how this robot would function. They had to plan every intricate detail down to what type of metal to use that could withstand the heat of a roaring blaze, the type of tread to use so the robot could navigate over debris and fallen trees, even the end weight and cost of the robot. At the competition, his team presented their project to a panel of judges. All of the presenting was done behind close doors so there could be no coaching by parents, teachers or coaches.

Part Two: The Robot Games

The ultimate goal is to earn the most points by completing missions. The mission field was made up of multiple natural disaster situations. Every mission had a very specific purpose tied to a real natural disaster. The more missions the team completed, the points they earned.
Each team had to create a physical robot and then program the robots from scratch. Possibilities were endless and it was fun to see what all the teams came up with.  Jackson really took to programing and quickly became the teams top programer.

Here's a link to a video that explains the missions. Natures Fury Mission Field. Some of the missions include; bringing supplies to emergency zones, raising a house on stilts, moving emergency vehicles to safe zones, saving power lines, saving pets and people, also navigating over flood waters and landslides.

A round was 2.5 minutes which is not enough to complete the entire course so it was up to the teams to chose which missions to complete.

Competition was done on stage with jumbo screens projecting the mission field to the spectators. Each team competed in 3 rounds and the highest score was tracked on the scoreboard.

The kids also presented their robot to the judges in an interview. They explained how everything worked and the thought process of why they chose to design the robot the way they did.

Part Three: Core Values

This was another interview with the judges to determine how well they embraced the core values of First Lego League. They were asked how well they worked as a team and how they overcame obstacles. Judges also had walked through the prep area and took note on how the teams were interacting with other teams, how clean they kept their work area and their overall sportsmanship.

Jackson had an amazing time throughout the entire season. Competition was an all day event between all the judge interviews and the battles. Jackson had the support of his Uncle, Grandma, Grandpa, Myself and my boyfriend Russ for the battles. It was such a fun and high energy environment. He is really looking forward to participating again next year.

Jacksons team, named Rescue Squad won the Judges Award for overcoming a major obstacle when they had to rebuild their entire robot only days before the competition.

Christmas

It was the first Christmas in our new house! I had been wanting to create a nature or woodland theme for years and this was the year to finally do it! With how face paced and technology driven things are now days,  I decided I was not going to give a single gift that was electronic in any way so I thought the two themes were perfect together. Our tree was adorned with; berries, acorns and pine cones, owls, birds, and squirrels to name a  few. It turned out to be one of my favorite trees ever.

I absolutely love hosting Christmas at my house. I feel very blessed that my family is willing to bundle up in the icy cold to spend the day at our home. Especially because I don't like going anywhere at all on Christmas.

My kitchen was filled with homemade treats,  plenty of comfort foods and warm drinks. My living room looked like something out of a magazine but the company and Christmas spirit was even better. It was wonderful.

Copper was so funny, he could smell the treats in his stocking and went straight for them in the morning.

Russ had wanted a deep fryer for a couple years so the kids got him one for Christmas. They wrapped up a 5Lb bag of potatoes to make french fries with but they gave that to him before the fryer and the look on his face was priceless (the kids thought it was hilarious). I'm not sure how I would have reacted to getting a bag of potatoes for Christmas. Haha

After all the gifts under the tree had been opened, I told the kids there was one more thing for them in their bedroom that was too awkward shaped to wrap. They each had gotten new furniture that they had wanted. Ashleigh got a make up table, chair and chevron blanket for her bed. Jackson got a couple tall bookshelves, cool display items and pillows. They had no idea, I loved it!

Christmas Eve

We spent a few hours at my Mom's on Christmas eve. She had a full dinner with all the trimmings and more pie than we could ever eat!

This year we did something new and had a white elephant gift exchange. It was hilarious! There was everything from an old umbrella to a stuffed mouse, chocolate pudding to a pocket sized box of tissues. The funnies where these crazy looking garden hooks that looked like a combination of a sea horse and a flamingo...on acid. It was so fun!

We exchanged regular gifts with the people we wouldn't see on Christmas day and opened our traditional Christmas Eve PJ's.

House Eddition - Moving Day

I tried to be as organized as possible for the move, I had color coded and labeled everything from the old house.

My Mom and Mark helped us move with their horse trailer. My little brother and his wife helped us with both of their vehicles. Russel and I had a friend from work offer to help as well so with our 3 cars also, it only took 2-3 trips each.

The only real hiccup was the new refrigerator not fitting through the doors but Russell and Justin had it in the house and set up by the time I got to the house. They moved in the washer & dryer and had them set up before I got back from the next trip also.

I was so appreciative of all the help. My kids were a great help too and didn't even complain... much. The only casualty of the entire move was a small glass lampshade. I was pleased.

After the few trips back and forth (a whopping 1.5 miles from the old house) we took a break and my mom bought everyone lunch. She is fantastic. Everything went pretty smooth.

The house was a wreck for a while. At least it was organized chaos. It's been fun seeing everything come together.
