Dad's visit from China

After living in China for years, my Dad has come back to the states after helping his wife, Shon, to get her visa. It was her first time in America. Her favorite thing is the air (how clean it is) and the beach.

To be brutally honest, I was nervous to spend time with her because I thought it would be insanely awkward. She is still learning English. In the months before, my Dad would occasionally put her on the phone when we were talking and our conversation was always limited to a couple pleasant exchanges; "Hello" "How are you", followed by awkward silence and maybe some uncomfortable laughter. I was prepared for a terribly unpleasant visit, or as much as one could be anyway.

Shame on me. She was absolutely lovely! It was wonderful to hear about how different things are from where she is from. Her English was much better than I was anticipating and certainly better than mine would have been in the time she's been learning.

We had some great conversations. My favorite part of their visit was when they offered to cook us a "real" Chinese dinner. I took them to our favorite Asian grocery store and I loved watching Shon pick out things that she recognized (that I had no clue what they were).

The food was delicious. Even my picky eater ate way more than I thought he would. Mostly fresh seasoned veggies, rather than they heavy and sauce laden Chinese food we are used to here.

We all met at my Aunt Glory and Uncle Don's house for a visit before they headed out of town. My Mom had some old slides for my Dad, and it was really neat to see pictures of me as a baby.

Glory and Don had Shon read them some hand written Chinese they had collected.

The last picture I have with both my parents is from 16 years ago, it's nice to have something newer. Shon loved my Mom and kept telling her how beautiful she is. Shon is adorable and so humble. It's fun to have a picture of my "mom's" together. I don't think most people have a picture of their Mom and Step-mom together, especially with their arms around each other.

It was a wonderful weekend visit. I'm glad they got to met Russell and it was great for my kids to see their Grandpa in person again rather than on video calls.

Jazz vs. Bulls

Russell is a HUGE Chicago Bulls fan. His parents are fans, His grandma is a fan. His friends are fans. So naturally we had to see the Jazz vs. the Bulls when they were in town. Sadly... the Jazz lost. Bitter sweet though since I had surprised him with the tickets for Christmas which made it extra sweet for him!
