Thankful Thursday

Of the many blessings I have, both large and small, here are a few things I am especially thankful for this week:

  • Getting comments on my blog posts, particularly the ones filled with great ideas/suggestions.
  • Learning lots of little tid-bits from Carl. The handyman that's been helping remodel my master bathroom off and on for the last few weeks. (did you know tile showers should be sealed every 6 months and not just once when the tile is installed? The sealer wears off over time, think of it like waxing a car. It repels soap, hard water, etc. Preserves the tile and grout but also helps to keep it clean)
  • Russell grocery shopping, cooking/grilling and cleaning up after dinner every night so far this week!
  • Washing machines. Clothes, towels, bedding.. all by hand? No thank you.
  • Naps
  • Shaved ice and color changing spoons as an added bonus
  • Neck, shoulder & back massages from my family, however short they might be. I have determined that 99% of my weekly (or daily) headaches are tension headaches. Any suggestions?
  • Aromatherapy pillow spray I found at Bath and Body works, it's lavender scent and smells heavenly.
  • Having two bathrooms. No more lines to use the potty.
  • Finding almost all the kids school clothes and supplies on sale or clearance (I shop for school supplies after school has already started. The kids gets lists of supplies they need from their teachers during the first week of school anyway and most stores mark down supplies once school starts.)

What's for dinner?

I love having a healthy home cooked meal on the table at 6 P.M. every night.

Too bad I can't say that with a straight face. In all reality I've totally dropped the ball on meals this summer. It's too hot to use the oven. Crock pot meals are only for cold weather (at least that's what my conscience it telling me). No one wants to eat the same thing. I'm not even hungry. Take your pick from any of the above mentioned excuses.

We've been eating out more than I'd like to admit. The funny thing is, I like to cook. Apron and everything. It's calming, I'm creating an edible masterpiece (or so I tell myself) and helping to keep my family healthy.

I need motivation.. enough to last forever or at least enough to get me through this next school year.  I remember talking to the mom of one of Ashleigh's friends a couple years ago and she telling me that her kids get cereal for dinner all the time because she's too busy to cook. I refuse to be that mom. Although, eating out multiple times per week isn't much better in my eyes.

I would be happy eating from the garden every night. Veggies; sauteed, baked or fried.. they are all good in my book or a fresh salad. I'm a light eater lately and most days don't even have an appetite. My family, especially the boys would think i'm crazy if I put a plate of veggies on the table and called it dinner. I need things healthy but substantial, quick, easy and inexpensive.

What are your favorite weekday meals? What are your tricks to stay on top of things? Motivate me...school starts on Monday.

Thankful Thursday

I am, once again, back on my own computer. Oh how I have missed it and my editing software. Lets see how long it lasts this time before dying on me again. I might actually have to spring for a new computer next time. I missed my Thankful Thursday last week and I've really missed blogging on a regular basis over the last couple months. I have a lot to catch up on.

As always, I have a lot to be thankful for and here are a few things on my mind today:

  • Free 10 min seated massage this afternoon, courtesy of the fitness center at work
  • Caulk & joint compound
  • Beach balls, diving sticks & goggles
  • Picnic baskets
  • Sun tea & lemonade
  • Anything from my garden
  • Feeling organized during a very hectic week

Thankful Thursday

What a trying week. My kids Aunt Melissa passed away unexpectedly. My kids are at their Dad's for a few weeks for the summer and their Aunt lives there too.  Last Friday was her birthday, she was my age. She hadn't been feeling well but she was hanging out and joking around with my kids like usual. By the next morning she was moaning in pain, would not wake up then started having seizures.

Melissa was taken by ambulance to the hospital. She was in a coma.  It turned out to be meningitis. A case more severe than her doctor had seen before. She was put on life support until today when her family let her pass on.  Life is so precious.

I have known Melissa for 13 years. She even lived with my ex and I for a couple months when we were still married so I had gotten to know her quite well.  I have some pretty funny memories fishing together. It's so sad that she is gone.

My daughter watched all of this happen Saturday morning and was traumatized.  My daughter and I talked for hours and hours about what happened. She felt bad for ever saying a rude word to her. She was scared it could happen to someone else or to her. She didn't want to be alone or go back to her Dad's where it happened. She was scared to go to sleep. She was unsure about what happens when you die.

My kids Dad and I are of different faiths, and therefore have different perspectives on what happens when our life on this earth is over. My daughter is stil figuring things out for herself. I told her it is very simple, "It will make sense in your head and feel right in your heart" and that's all there is to it. I reassured Ashleigh that Melissa was greeted with open arms by her brother and sister who had already passed, along other loved ones. We also talked about how important it is to treat people well, live everyday the best we can and tell our family that we love them everyday, because we never know how much longer we will have here. Everyday is a gift and we shouldn't take it for granted. I did reassure Ashleigh that no amount of teasing or occasional rude remarks would make Melissa think, even for a second, that Ashleigh did not care about her. Saying goodbye to someone in your life is hard for any adult but I think especially difficult for a child.

My alarm went off this morning and before I even opened my eyes I was already complaining to myself about not wanting to go to work. All I wanted to do was; stay home, relax, enjoy my house and my garden. Then I thought, the biggest problem I have is that I don't want to go into work? Yet 15 minutes away, laying in a hospital bed, was someone I've known for a long time and her life was ending later today. It could have just as easily been me. How dare I? I felt selfish. I have no room for complaint.

Every day is truly a blessing. My day should have started with a grateful heart. I get one more day to live where so many do not and I get one more day to enjoy my loved ones where many pass away all too soon.  Please keep Melissa's family in your prayers.

With a very heavy heart, here are some things I am especially thankful for today:

  • Faith
  • Hope
  • Love
  • Prayer
  • Good Health
  • Comfort
  • Patience
  • Modern medicine
  • Friendship
  • Understanding
  • Forgiveness

Melissa had no insurance.
If you can find it in your heart and your pocketbook to help,  please go to any Wells Fargo Bank Branch and deposit in the "Melissa Red Reeves Memorial Fund" to help relieve some of the financial burden on her family and give her the service she deserves.

Thankful Thursday

There's only ten minutes left of Thursday so here is a quick list of some things I am thankful for today.

- My roof getting fixed today! No more 'raining' in the dining room
- Being able to use my rooftop evaporative cooler again (now that the roof is fixed) the last few days have been miserably hot!
- Popsicles. Lots and lots of Popsicles.
- My living room ceiling fan... on high.
- My car not overheating. It was close, we're talking the temp gauge was in the red. Thankfully I was on my way to Jiffy lube when it happened (where my ex works, to drop off something for my daughter who is spending a few weeks with him this summer) I could have easily been on the freeway or the middle of nowhere with an overheated engine in 100 degree weather.
- I slept last night. I fell asleep and didn't wake up a single time until my alarm went off. I can't even begin to remember the last time that happened.
- I received a $20 gift card from work (which will used to buy breakfast/lunch for this next week. Yum)
- It's thousands of miles away, but I get to watch the Olympics every night.
