Thankful Thursday

Of the many blessings I have, I am thankful for:

  • Mocha frappuccino
  • Sun tea
  • Water & our Brita water filter, which makes our water taste so much better and NO more plastic water bottles in our house
  • Sunscreen & chapstic
  • Water spicket & hose (digging wells, buckets & trenches.. no thank you)
  • Shade trees and a breeze when it's super hot
  • Laughter
  • Colors and smells of beautiful flowers
  • Can openers
  • Toothbrush, paste, floss & mouthwash (can you even fathom the bad breath cavemen must of had!)

Face time

Now that my kids are out of school for the summer, I am having to fight my daughter for my ipad most days. She watches movies, talks to friends and takes pictures and videos all the time.  I came across these beauties a while ago and laughed too hard not to share:

I still crack up every time I look at these.
They remind me of those fun house mirrors you see at carnivals.

This one is pretty blurry but it just made me smile.
I sure love these two crazy kids.

I cannot take credit for making this and I don't know who the credit goes to.
I saw this on Pintrest and just wanted to share.

Garden Update

Here's a few pictures from this last week. I love the entrence, it feels like my own little secret garden tucked around the side of the house. Who knew you could make something so amazing from a pile of old wood pallets!  My four potato plants are looking great. I've never in my life grown potatoes though, so we will see what happens but I'm pretty excited so far. The first two rows of corn are actually looking like corn and the second two rows (planted weeks later) have sprouted and are a few inches tall.

One of my eggplants has a flower so hopefully I will see little eggplants soon. (I had no idea eggplants would have purple flowers, go figure).  Out of my entire garden, I am most excited for the tomatoes. Most are at least a couple feet tall now and I'm having to fight the aphids for them but, so far I am winning. I'm spraying them every few days with a homemake bug spray (1 TLB soap and 1 TLB baking soda disolved in a spray bottle) and it's working really well. Most of the plants are from a mixed packet of heirloom tomato seeds so I could end up with a few of the same type of plant but I really hope  I end up with at least one of each six tomato types out of the nine I planted from the packet.

I also have flowers on my tomatoes, cucumbers, cantaloupe, and the nasturtiums are starting to bloom.

After I watered today, I harvested a few strawberries, two heads of  broccoli, a tiny bouquet of flowers and a handfull of cherries off the trees. I would certainly starve if I had to live off the land but I feel pretty accomplished!

Thankful Thursday

I cannot believe it's June already! I'm sitting here trying to think of some witty comment about how fast this year is going by and Jackson just announced to me that he's getting married. Thank goodness he's talking about his character in a video game but I found it quite ironic. I'm sure both my kids will be grown before I know it, but for now, I just want to make sure they have a fun summer. I think we are off to a good start with multiple sleepovers, BBQs, bonfires & popsicles.. and they haven't even been out of school for a full week yet.

I'm determined to get out and make the most of the summer.  I'm looking forward to all sorts of fun events throughout the Salt Lake valley and the adventures of camping with a six month old puppy (which I have determined is the equivalent to a toddler's terrible two's).  I am glad the work week is almost over and I have the weekend off.

Of the many blessings I have, here are a few things I am thankful for today:

  • Slushies, snow cones & popsicles
  • Fans & AC
  • Fresh fruit - especially nectarines
  • Ladybugs - for eating the aphids in my garden
  • Joint compound - I am "attempting" to fill in the lines of the paneling in my living room before painting it in hopes that it will look better. I think the previous owners of my house were trying to be very thrifty for this room addition by using exterior wood paneling on two of the walls
  • Grilled veggies and even more importantly, my picky eater enjoying them also
  • The guys at Pep Boys that fixed my flat tire tonight, in less than 20 min, while my groceries sat in the back seat - that was not a nice surprise to see walking out of the grocery store

Jackson is still playing his game, he's chopping wood to build a house and just told our dog, "I got married Copper, It's exhausting". He cracks me up!

Belt Promotion

Hard work and dedication sure pays off! Congratulations on your brown belt Jackson!

This group gets smaller and smaller as these kids progress in rank. At one of last year's promotions, Jackson's group consisted of twenty kids and now it's down to just nine. After almost two years, I've enjoyed watching these kids grow up together and become close friends.

Burn baby burn

We started the summer off with our first annual homework bonfire and marshmallow roast. Jackson, Ashleigh, and Kylee (best friend) cleaned out folders & binders of all things school related and were thrilled to feed it to our fire pit in the backyard.

Who knew cursive, multiplication, tests, and quizzes could make such delicious smores!
